INTO THE NIGHT: PORTRAITS LIFE AND DEATH features intimate, provocative stories of men and women forever changed by their encounters with mortality.

We don't know how. We don't know when. But death comes for us all.

To be human is to wrestle with this truth and with the great unanswered question: How do we live with death in our eye? Do we go gently or raging against the dying light? Do we depart with equanimity or with anger? With clenched fists or more commonly with denial? Or do we see death as something to be fought and even possibly conquered, a challenge increasingly pursued by some of the brightest scientific minds? Finally, what are the stories we tell ourselves? Whether shaped by religion, science, art, the natural world, the power of love, do these narratives sustain us or do they fall away when we suddenly find ourselves "with skin in the game"?

INTO THE NIGHT: Portraits of Life and Death features fascinating, unexpected voices from various walks of life: old and young, believers and nonbelievers, the dying and the healthy, well known and obscure. Among them: Caitlin Doughty, an alternative mortician and bestselling author with her own YouTube following; Adam Frank, an astrophysicist and NPR commentator, Gabriel Byrne, renowned actor of stage and screen; Max More, a cryonicist and futurist; and Phyllis Tickle, a near-death experience spokesperson and religious historian.

However varied their backgrounds, all are unified by their uncommon eloquence and intelligence, and most important by their dramatic experience of death. Each of them has been shocked into an awareness of mortality—and they are forever changed. For them death is no longer an abstraction, far away in the future. Whether through a dire prognosis, the imminence of their own death, the loss of a loved one, a sudden epiphany, or a temperament born to question, these are people who have truly "awakened" to their own mortality.

INTO THE NIGHT, PART TWO features intimate, provocative stories of nine men and women forever changed by their encounters with mortality. Through the lenses of Buddhism, a cancer diagnosis, a Native American vision quest, Talmudic perspectives, artistic pursuits, medical advances in aging and longevity, and breakthrough technologies, they challenge us to rethink our place in the universe.

These dramatic first-hand accounts unsettle, awaken and inspire.

cotb_laurels-660.png

A CRIME ON THE BAYOU is the story of Gary Duncan, a Black teenager from Plaquemines Parish, a swampy strip of land south of New Orleans.

In 1966, Duncan tries to break up an argument between white and Black teenagers outside a newly integrated school, in the course of which he dares to gently lay a hand on a white boy's arm. That night, police burst into Duncan's trailer and arrest him for assault on a minor.

A young Jewish attorney, Richard Sobol, leaves his prestigious D.C. firm to volunteer in New Orleans. With his help, Duncan bravely stands up to a racist legal system powered by a white supremacist boss to challenge his unfair arrest. Their fight goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, and their lifelong friendship is forged.

Written and directed by Nancy Buirski A CRIME ON THE BAYOU is the final film in her acclaimed trilogy profiling brave individuals who fought for justice in and around the Civil Rights era. The other films are The Loving Story and The Rape of Recy Taylor.

"Every American should watch this riveting portrayal of the breadth and depth of racial injustice in the Deep South of the 1960s."
Jane Dailey, Professor of American History, University of Chicago, Author, White Fright: The Sexual Panic at the Heart of America's Racist History

"Vivid...Provide[s] an unusually palpable sense of just how much deeply-ingrained institutional and cultural bias needed to be overcome for the civil rights movement to make real headway...[An] engrossing, flavorful document."
Dennis Harvey, Variety

"A CRIME ON THE BAYOU never explodes with fury. But that doesn't mean you won't feel enraged while taking in the maddening series of systematic wrongs committed against Sobol and Duncan."
Robert Daniels, The Los Angeles Times

"Thoughtful and illuminating...Shines a light on a groundbreaking piece of recent American history that will be news to many viewers."
Sheri Linden, The Hollywood Reporter

"Filmmaker Nancy Buirski has an elegant, judicious way of imparting the facts of the case, taking not just the political temperature of the moment (boiling) but finely sketching the character and minds of the people involved. 4 out of 4 stars."
Steven Boone, Roger Ebert

"Buirski follows the case with cogency and clarity, illuminating its implications and putting it in the perspective of Black and white alliances in the struggle for Civil Rights."
Peter Keough, The Boston Globe

"It has a potent idea, which is to show how even bureaucratic aspects of the legal system in the Deep South in the 1960s could be weaponized against Black Americans."
Ben Kenigsberg, New York Times

"Must-see...A CRIME ON THE BAYOU focuses on an incident that happened in 1966 but is, infuriatingly, still timely and relevant more than half a century later."
Lois Alter Mark, Alliance of Women Film Journalists

"Buirski has assembled an impressive set of historical sources but allows the story to unfold so naturally that it feels as if it were being told for the first time...The issues at the heart of this film remain very much alive today."
Jennie Kermode, Eye for Film

"The film sharply illustrates the pervasive character of systemic racism that allows one person to use his position in society to tangle another in a web that can trap him for a lifetime."
Pat Mullen, POV Magazine

"Tells a powerful, important story, the reverberations of which still linger."
Jeffrey M. Anderson, Common Sense Media

"Essential...An urgent, exceptionally well told chronicle of an important but often forgotten moment in American history."
Sean Patrick, Vocal

"Topical and gripping...Given current events, rarely has a film felt so essential."
Mike Scott, Times-Picayune

"Very well-made...An essential piece to think about the United States of America - how it was and why it is like it is today."
Letícia Magalhaes, Cine Suffragette

"If you want to look at this national conversation about systemic racism, this is a nice demonstration of where it manifests."
Kevin Carr, Fat Guys at the Movies

"Documentarian Nancy Buirski deploys a delicate cinematic elegance to tell Duncan's tale."
MaryAnn Johanson, Flick Filosophe

"I strongly recommend A CRIME ON THE BAYOU...The story it tells is about a key moment in the fight against Jim Crow, and it tells it well."
Louis Proyect, The Unrepentant Marxist

"Fascinating...A very different documentary on race and hate in the 1960s. Normally, we are shown stories of illegal incarceration, pain and suffering...Could we have here a story of the carriage of justice?"
Robin Clifford, Reeling Reviews

WHAT IS CONSCIOUSNESS?
Is it in all living beings? Why are we predisposed for mystical experience? AWARE: Glimpses of Consciousness follows six brilliant researchers approaching the mystery from radically different perspectivesthrough high-tech brain research and Eastern meditation, by scientifically exploring inner space through psychedelic substances and by investigating the consciousness of plants. With the explosion of research into consciousness, scientists are arriving at new insights—some of which have been integral to Indigenous knowledge for millennia.100% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes!

CLEAN DRINKING WATER
The outrageous condition of the municipal water in Jackson, Mississippi has brought to the foreground the primary need for “infrastructure” repair in our marginalized communities. In THIRST FOR JUSTICE, armed only with facts and their illnesses, extraordinary citizens from three communities take on industry and government, risking arrest to demand and protect clean water.

FOOD IN A CHANGING CLIMATE
The global unsustainable hunger for meat is being met head-on by the advances in biotechnology, imagining a world where real meat is produced sustainably without the impact on climate change or the need to breed, raise and slaughter animals. Exploring the game-changing development of “cultivated” meat, MEAT THE FUTURE is narrated by Jane Goodall and featuring music by Moby

TALKING ABOUT MORTALITY
We are all mortal, but most of us put off actually facing death as a reality. Through the lens of astrophysics, art, cryonics, near death experiences and green burials, INTO THE NIGHT: Portraits of Life and Death challenges us to rethink our place in the universe as people share their encounters with mortality. These dramatic, first-person accounts unsettle, awaken, and inspire.

WELCOMING REFUGEES
During a time of racist nationalism and emboldened anti-immigrant bigotry, the conservative state of Nebraska resettles more refugees per capita than any other state. A HOME CALLED NEBRASKA is the story of midwestern welcome and acceptance, spotlighting both the people who escaped war, torture and persecution and the generous Nebraskans who welcomed them, taught them, celebrated with them, and helped them succeed in their new home. This heartwarming documentary offers a compelling portrait of ordinary people standing up for what is right, inspiring us to do the same.

EMBARGO STILL?
Presenting a critical perspective on both governments, FRENEMIES: Cuba and the U.S. Embargo examines the fraught relationship between the island nation of Cuba and the United States. Set to the pulsating beats of Afro-Caribbean music, blending 1950s archival footage with contemporary shots of Cuba's economic decay and vibrant culture, the film paints a vivid portrait of a nation fighting for survival against the world's longest-running embargo. The United Nations has voted almost thirty times for the embargo to be lifted.

 THE VOW FROM HIROSHIMA

The Vow from Hiroshima is an intimate portrait of Setsuko Thurlow, an 85-year-old survivor of the atomic bomb in Hiroshima and a passionate campaigner for the abolition of nuclear weapons. Her moving personal story and history of activism is told through the lens of her growing friendship with a second generation survivor, Mitchie Takeuchi.

THE VOW FROM HIROSHIMA

Since Russia’s war on Ukraine began, we have heard Russian president Vladimir Putin make veiled threats of using nuclear weapons. In this time of international danger, it is evident to those with the courage to face the truth that humanity must banish nuclear weapons from the face of the earth. Those who have felt the multi-generational impact of nuclear weapons can be proud of Setsuko and inspired by her mission to bring this human understanding forward.

THE VOW FROM HIROSHIMA trailer

"Setsuko in speaking out as a survivor, brings to the world stage a discussion about individual moral choice and the human rights issues of nuclear arms. Most importantly, she wants to focus not on the devastation or survivor guilt but on the strength of survivors. And the endurance and patience required to do the hard and lonely work of working for peace. In this film you understand why Dr. Thurlow has been recognized globally for her lifelong activism and why she was chosen to accept the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the International Coalition to Abolish nuclear weapons."
Lynn Deutscher Kobayashi, President
Greater Toronto Chapter, National Association of Japanese Canadians

"This is the film I would highly recommend for our younger generations to see. Actually this is a film I would like everyone in the world to see."
Matsui Kazumi, Mayor of the City of Hiroshima

"Narrated through the experiences of two resilient hibakusha women, The Vow from Hiroshima is a well-researched, poignant and thoughtful work on the humanitarian approach to nuclear weapons. It is a fascinating story of how geopolitics and civil society intersects to influence policy, and how change is possible despite all odds."
Jayita Sarkar, Assistant Professor of International Relations, Boston University

This year our special Festival in a Box deal is available for virtual events. For more information, please email us at [email protected]. On Time events are subject to availability.

All of our environmental titles are available for selection, including brand new releases THE SHADOW OF GOLD, THIRST FOR JUSTICE, MEAT THE FUTURE, ENTANGLED, and NATURE'S CLEANUP CREW. Also available for this special package offer are popular films such as NO FEAR NO FAVOR, INTO THE CANYON, POINT OF NO RETURN, CONNECTIVITY PROJECT, COOKED, FROM SEED TO SEED, PLANETARY, and many more.

Each new major award-winning film has a different, vital story to tell. These films are available both virtually and for in-person events. For more information on booking a virtual screening right now, please go to Bullfrog Communities Streaming.

Below is a list of primary recommendations from our new releases. Go to Earth Day Festival in a Box to see the special rates and book by April 30, 2022!

THE SHADOW OF GOLD (New release!)
An unflinching look at how the world's favorite heavy metal is extracted from the earth.
"A reminder that we are going to greater lengths — with more ecological and human collateral — to extract smaller amounts of gold. As an educator, I look for films like this one to convey complex, systematic problems through tangible stories of impacted communities. It's an informative look at the global network of drivers behind the large-and small-scale gold mining industries."

Mozhgon Rajaee, Assistant Professor of Public Health, Oakland University
"By shining a light on the possibilities for more sustainable practices, the film encourages viewers to strive to protect the purity of our environment, and, finally, to re-think the sort of luxury that comes in gold."
Maria Paula Serrano, Vancouver Weekly

The Shadow of Gold

Nominee, Best Documentary Feature, Raindance Film Festival
Award of Merit Special Mention, Accolade Global Film Competition
"Powerful and disturbing. The US is the richest country in the world. It is an obscenity that we allow Indigenous Americans and poor and minority urban people - even when on municipal water supplies — to drink water so contaminated as to threaten their health and cognitive function. It is especially tragic when our children drink contaminated water that will increase their risk of cancer later in life and cause an irreversible loss of IQ that will last as long as they live."
David O. Carpenter, M.D., Director, Institute for Health and the Environment, University at Albany
"Opens eyes to the hard-hit communities at home in USA. The hollowed-out humanity of corporate spokespeople front unconvincingly for executives who refuse interviews. Locals speak powerfully about what this travesty means. The film points out - our survival is at stake and access to clean water is key." Randy Hayes, Founder, Rainforest Action Network

ENTANGLED (New release!)
How climate change has accelerated a collision between one of the world's most endangered species, N. America's most valuable fishery, and a federal agency mandated to protect both.
Best Non-Broadcast Film, Jackson Wild Media Awards
Best Feature Film, International Wildlife Film Festival
John de Graaf Environmental Filmmaking Award, Wild & Scenic Film Festival
Best Conservation Film, International Ocean Film Festival
"This powerful and effective film lays out two fundamental structural problems in current efforts at conservation as a whole: When we face tough challenges, we replace 'process' with results. ENTANGLED shows clearly that management measures need to be biologically effective, not just politically palatable."
Matthew McKenzie, Professor of History, University of Connecticut, Author, Breaking the Banks and Clearing the Coastline
"A brilliant film that brings the difficult conversations to the forefront, while encouraging a solutions-based approach by all sides that is urgently needed to help save our marine life, our oceans, and ultimately ourselves...[The film] presents the current plight of the North Atlantic Right Whale with a balanced perspective showcasing the complex and disturbing effects of climate change and human interaction on an already endangered species."
Ana Blanco, Executive Director, International Ocean Film Festival

NATURE'S CLEANUP CREW (New release!)
Examines the lives of ants, rats, opossums, foxes and vultures, who live among us in the world’s cities, recycling the mountains of waste we leave behind.
Animal Behavior Society Film Festival
"Reveals the hidden lives of critters in and around cities. This film is entertaining with a solid educational perspective that will engage students and the general public."
Mark Hostetler, Professor of Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, University of Florida
"Taken on a global journey, we learn the critical role these creatures hold in the urban centers they call home. NATURE'S CLEANUP CREW complements science topics like predator-prey relationships, biodiversity, and species decline. It allows students to see science skills in practice: designing and implementing investigations based on scientific inquiry, cause and effect relationships, and using technology to gather data. Indirectly, students see professionals collaborating to solve problems, struggling with complex issues, and using media to raise awareness. This communication about science is as vital as the science itself."
Jennifer Hammonds, Senior Manager, Curriculum and Instruction, Education and Engagement, National Wildlife Federation

Muna Ndulo, Professor, International and Comparative Law, Director, Berger International Studies Program, Cornell University

Sustainability Award, Cinema Verde International Film & Arts Festival
Bellingham Human Rights Film Festival
Colorado Environmental Film Festival

"This is probably one of the most important projects on earth at this time. Its brilliance lies in its simplicity and its necessity. You have hit the core of not just the problem but of where we should all be focusing our attention. I was so deeply moved by this work."
Jean Houston, Co-Founder, The Foundation for Mind Research
"This series of short films provides inspiring stories and vignettes that support a greater awareness of the interrelated systems of life. The film series will be a great jumping off point for students, teachers, and community members who are interested in considering a range of environmental studies, stewardship activities, or advocacy that can make a difference."

COOKED
Judith Helfand's searing investigation into the politics of "disaster," by way of the deadly 1995 Chicago heat wave.
Best Feature Film, EarthxFilm
Best Film, Environmental Film Festival at Yale
DOCNYC

"Shines a light on the issues of poverty, race, class, and education that underlie how natural disasters take lives."
Brian Tallerico, RogerEbert.com
"Chronicles the painful truth that waiting for the government can be hazardous to your health. The twin vulnerability of poverty and race placed African Americans at special risk in the 1995 Chicago heat wave. In America, zip code is more important than genetic code and some people and communities have the wrong complexion for protection."
Dr. Robert D. Bullard, Professor, Urban Planning and Environmental Policy, Texas Southern University, Author, Race, Place, and Environmental Justice After Hurricane Katrina

Best Documentary Film, Popular Culture Association, DC

Mother Nature Network
"A loving and enjoyable encouragement for anyone who cares about food and farming...I liked all the people featured in the film and the emphasis on community. It made me want to move to Canada."
Claire Hope Cummings, Author, Uncertain Peril: Genetic Engineering and the Future of Seeds

Hot Docs, Canadian International Documentary Film Festival Sheffield Doc/Fest

Dennis Harvey, Variety
"A gift to the rising consciousness among those who see and feel themselves as planetary citizens and for those who could benefit from such a worldview. Words of insight and wisdom from the thinkers progress here like poignant epigrams, each of which could front entire chapters of discourse."
